Cool Careers: What’s it like to be a professional chef?

Welcome to Cool Careers! A new Facebook Live interview series from Britannica Digital Learning.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Simple question, right? At Britannica Digital Learning, we reach over 140 million students in 83 countries around the world—over 30 million in the US alone! So we believe a big part of our job here is to inspire students and ignite their career curiosity, letting them pursue a future that brings them satisfaction, stability, and joy.

With that in mind, we’re excited to invite you to tune in once a month to “Cool Careers,” a brand new Facebook Live interview series from Britannica!

Join us as we meet some awesome people who do incredible things every day and ask them burning questions like: What subjects in school inspired you? Which activities or passions influenced your career path? What is your current job is like and what do you love most about it? What advice you would give to a student who is curious about pursuing a similar path?

This December, meet Nicole Tingwall, a.k.a. the Windy City Dinner Fairy! Nicole is a Chicago pastry chef specializing in custom cakes and cupcakes. Hear all about Nicole’s career path and what it’s like to create edible art every day.

About Nicole Tingwall and Windy City Dinner Fairy

Food artist Nicole Tingwall is the owner and head chef of Windy City Dinner Fairy. She left her first career as a paralegal to follow her dreams, graduating top-of-her-class at the Cooking and Hospitality School of Chicago and earning her Pâtisserie Arts degree.

In 2010, Nicole started providing catering services to the Chicagoland area as the Windy City Dinner Fairy and by 2014 she’d established herself as a unique and creative cake artist. Today, Nicole is a freelance foodie-for-hire—styling and photographing food for product promotion, recipe development, and creating stunning custom cakes.

Nicole’s sweet creations have received high praise as the “best themed cakes in Chicago.” She’s appeared on Windy City Live, been named Protein Bar’s “Super Spice Girl,” and taught cupcake decorating at Macy’s. Her recipes have been featured on Huffington Post, The FeedFeed, and countless other websites and magazines.
